Monastery Ostrog is a monastery of an Orthodox Church, located in a huge Ostrog`s shaft, near Nikšić. Monastery Ostrog is dedicated to St. Vasilije Ostroški. Monastery Ostrog is the most important place of pilgrimage in Montenegro. Monastery includes two parts – which first is Lower Monastery, placed next to Church of St. Trojice, built in 1824., surrounded by a majority of the Monastery`s facilities including shelters. To the Upper Monastery, implanted into the rock, arrives by a narrow footpath, whose length is 3 km, that leads uphill to two small cave churches dedicated to Holy Cross and magnificently decorated frescoes depicting St.Sava and St.Vasilije Ostroški and scenes from Christ`s life. The Ostrog Monastery was founded in the 17th century by the Metropolitan Bishop of Herzegovina Vasilije, who left the monastery Tvrdos in Herzegovina because of the Turkish invasion. He died in Ostrog in 1671. The Ostrog monastery in not only religious, but also cultural and historical monument. It testifies about the past and present time, about belief, culture and tradition of the people how live here for centuries.
